#5 Interview with Jonathan Hoyt

This is the fifth ‘social’ interview in a series with the jsDay 2012 speakers: it’s ‘social’ because the questions have been submitted and voted online on Facebook.

We are happy to introduce you Jonathan Hoyt, a developer at GitHub, where he primarily work on Gauges and Speaker Deck.

He will give a session at jsDay called “HUBOT img me woman laughing alone with salad” Thusday May 17th at 16:30 pm on track 2.

The interview:

Things that you consider before choosing a framework for a project?
I consider which framework will get me implementing features the fastest. Then I pick that one.

What should i learn next?
Does not matter, just always keep learning. I like to play with new libraries, new languages, and new development tools everyday.
The brain is a muscle, exercise it.

What are your throughts about functional programming?
I learned functional programming first so I still tend to think thru problems that way.

Sheldon or Leonard?

Who’s your programming hero?
I’ve got two. John Nunemaker and Brandon Keepers.

Who killed JFK?
Lee Harvey Oswald

What’s the average beer per hour factor during conferences and a normal hangout?

What do you think about Coffeescript?
Love it. I prefer to write Coffeescript over Javascript.

Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet?

What do you like and what not about javascript?
If I could have Ruby in the browser instead of Javascript I would take it. But that isn’t the reality, so I’ve learned to love Javascript with all of its warts.

Which opensource projects are you following the most?
Projects that I’m maintaining (https://github.com/jonmagic) and projects I see in Peter Coopers newsletters each week.

Did your love for programming cause you some troubles with your partner?

Suggest a book to read.
