This is the seventh ‘social’ interview in a series with the jsDay 2012 speakers: it’s ‘social’ because the questions have been submitted and voted online on Facebook.

We are happy to introduce you Marco Cedaro, a “lazy developer” with two kids, meteoropathy and an insane passion for lo-fi music and frontend developer since 1998

He will give a session at jsDay called “It’s not you, it’s me” Thusday May 17th at 14:30 pm on track 2.

The interview:

DISCLAIMER
It took me a while starting to answer to social questions: I’m awfully late, so I’ll try to reply without overthinking the answers.. get them as a stream of consciousness

Things that you consider before choosing a framework for a project?
I will partially deal with this topic during my talk, do you really want me to spoiler it?
if you keep in consideration to choose of a framework for a new project, instead of being stuck in your previous choices, you’ve already done a step in the right direction. Why and how is the talk

What do you think about Coffeescript?
I don’t like metalanguages.
I do understand why it could be helpful in a team without a deep javascript knowledge, but still can’t get why you should use it if you know it: javascript is fun, why bother?

What do you like and what not about javascript?
I simply love functional programming, how versatile javascript is and the fact that it’s easy to start from scratch, but you can also do complex stuff manner you prefer.

What should i learn next?
I can tell you what I want to learn next: strict mode, mobile debugging and responsive design.

Sheldon or Leonard?
I would rather say Penny, but I’ll pick Sheldon (do someone really choose Leonard??)

Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet?
I hate 80s and I grew up surrounded by the question Nofx or Rancid and still don’t have the answer (right now Rancid, for what it worth) so I think I don’t have any clue how to answer that.

Who’s your programming hero?
I don’t think I have one, but I love Nicholas Zakas point of view on development.
I think if I have to pick one it will surely be him

Who killed JFK?
Too much tv

What’s the average beer per hour factor during conferences and a normal hangout?
1:1
conferences are not about drinking, are about learning…
who am I kidding? it’s just that I drink a lot in normal hangouts too

Did your love for programming cause you some troubles with your partner?
Not programming, but conferences, both speaking and organizing a little bit, yes

Suggest a book to read.
Tech related everything Zakas wrote, otherwise everything Craig Thompson drew (warning: graphic novels ahead)

You can find Marco on twitter (@cedmax) and on his website.

This is the sixth ‘social’ interview in a series with the jsDay 2012 speakers: it’s ‘social’ because the questions have been submitted and voted online on Facebook.

We are happy to introduce you Matteo Collina, a software engineer with a passion for coding, distributed architecture and agile methodologies.

He will give a session at jsDay called “The secret behind Google Docs, Google Wave and Zoho Suite: Operational Transformation” Wednesday May 16th at 17:30 pm on track 1.

The interview:

Things that you consider before choosing a framework for a project?
The first main driver are the requirements, and they are REALLY important but there are so many X shop out there that focus on only one technology, trying to solve all their needs with it. The second driver is the community behind that framework/library: is it growing? shrinking? is the project active? will I have to maintain it myself one day?
These are really important question that I answer every time I make a choice, but there are more depending on the requirements (skills, people, deployment, ecc).

What should i learn next?
Something that makes you happy, if it feels ‘right’, go for it!

Who’s your programming hero?
I’m a Rubyist, so it’s easy to say: _why, because of his love for teaching children .

Who killed JFK?
A frustrated programmer .

What’s the average beer per hour factor during conferences and a normal hangout?
Beer? It’s too light!

What do you think about Coffeescript?
I love Coffeescript because it makes me faster in writing code. However I’m somewhat scared that the project might disappear after some years, leaving my old ‘.coffee’ behind, but I don’t think it’ll be a problem in JS land, as the tech changes so fast .

What do you like and what not about javascript?
I hate the setTimeout order of parameters: I want to pass that damn number before the function!

Which opensource projects are you following the most?
Node.js

Did your love for programming cause you some troubles with your partner?
She tried once to kill my Macbook Air, but it survived .

You can find Matteo on twitter (@matteocollina) and on his blog.

The interview:

Things that you consider before choosing a framework for a project?
I consider which framework will get me implementing features the fastest. Then I pick that one.

What should i learn next?
Does not matter, just always keep learning. I like to play with new libraries, new languages, and new development tools everyday.
The brain is a muscle, exercise it.

What are your throughts about functional programming?
I learned functional programming first so I still tend to think thru problems that way.

Sheldon or Leonard?
Sheldon

Who’s your programming hero?
I’ve got two. John Nunemaker and Brandon Keepers.

Who killed JFK?
Lee Harvey Oswald

What’s the average beer per hour factor during conferences and a normal hangout?
2

What do you think about Coffeescript?
Love it. I prefer to write Coffeescript over Javascript.

Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet?
???

What do you like and what not about javascript?
If I could have Ruby in the browser instead of Javascript I would take it. But that isn’t the reality, so I’ve learned to love Javascript with all of its warts.

Which opensource projects are you following the most?
Projects that I’m maintaining (http://github.com/jonmagic) and projects I see in Peter Coopers newsletters each week.

Did your love for programming cause you some troubles with your partner?
Nope

Suggest a book to read.
How to Win Friends & Influence People

You can find Jonathan on twitter (@jonmagic), on github and on his blog.

This is the fourth ‘social’ interview in a series with the jsDay 2012 speakers: it’s ‘social’ because the questions have been submitted and voted online on Facebook.

We are happy to introduce you Brandon Keepers, a developer at GitHub.

He will give a session at jsDay called “JavaScript Application Architecture” Wednesday May 16th at 2:30 pm on track 1.

The interview:

Things that you consider before choosing a framework for a project?
Does it take care of a lot of plumbing but stay out of your way when you need it to? How active is the community around it?

What should i learn next?
Something that brings you joy, because that will inspire you to learn something else. If you haven’t played with WebScokets yet, go build a site that uses them right now. It’s incredibly fun to interact with your visitors in realtime.

What are your throughts about functional programming?
I’m fascinated by it. The more I use functional languages, the better my code in procedural languages gets. I would love to spend more time in a purely functional language so I can’t cheat by sneaking in procedural bits.

Sheldon or Leonard?
I’m ashamed to say that I’ve never actually watched an episode of Big Bang Theory.

Who’s your programming hero?
Martin Fowler’s writing had an enormous impact on me earlier in my career, but my heroes are people that maintain active open source projects; it can be a job with a huge burden and little reward.

Who killed JFK?
The Hamburglar.

What’s the average beer per hour factor during conferences and a normal hangout?
1.437 beers per person per hour.

What do you think about Coffeescript?
I hated it at first, but it quickly grew on me. Now I barely remember pure JavaScript syntax. I think CoffeeScript is important because the language can continue to evolve even though the JavaScript implementations don’t.

Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet?
Who cares?

What do you like and what not about javascript?
Prototypical inheritance and closures.

Which opensource projects are you following the most?
ALL THE PROJECTS!

Did your love for programming cause you some troubles with your partner?
Only when I bring my laptop to bed.

Suggest a book to read.
How to Win Friends and Influence People. (which should have been titled: How To Be a Decent Human Being and Make Other People Better)

You can find Brandon on twitter (@bkeepers), on github and on his blog.

This is the third ‘social’ interview in a series with the jsDay 2012 speakers: it’s ‘social’ because the questions have been submitted and voted online on Facebook.

We are happy to introduce you Pierre Spring (@shvi), he is the leading creative force and one of the co-founders of Nelmio. His interests don’t really have a limit. At the moment he can’t really stop programming in JavaScript and he is especially happy when he can work on mobile web applications.

He will give a session at jsDay called “Backbone.js FTW!” Wednesday May 16th at 12 am on track 1.

The interview:

Things that you consider before choosing a framework for a project?
Documentation, community size and who uses it in production.

What should i learn next?
Whatever you don’t know about. For me that would be coffeescript,
node.js and responsive design.

What are your throughts about functional programming?
I started out with Scheme/Lisp, so to me they are natural. When I
discovered the beauty of JavaScript, I decided that I’d never touch a
line of PHP again. And I almost succeeded.

Sheldon or Leonard?
Sheldon. Leonard is not even remotely interesting. I am jealous about
him having an affaire with Penny though.

Who’s your programming hero?
Hmm… I don’t really have one. My heroes are the speakers and teachers
that manage to bring knowledge and enthusiasm: Douglas Crockford, Joel
Spolsky, Jeff Atwood, Uncle Bob Martin, and many more. I am especially
thankful to Spolsky, as his words made me quit my job and start my own
company!

What features would you like to see in the next PHP version?
I don’t know really. It’s quite good as it is. Why should we change
it? What I’d like to see is Node.js to mature so that we could stop
using PHP altogether. Not because PHP is bad, but because I love
JavaScript?

Who killed JFK?
Say who?

What’s the average beer per hour factor during conferences and a normal hangout?
I’d say 3l/day always.

What do you like and what not about javascript?
After 3 years of intensive JavaScript I still have this honeymoon
feeling where I think that JavaScript has no flaw.
Well, maybe the lack of block scope and global variables. But that’s
just to complain.

Which opensource projects are you following the most?
Backbone.js, Require.js, moment.js…

Did your love for programming cause you some troubles with your partner?
Maybe a divorce? But maybe that was just me

Suggest a book to read.
I guess you expect a tech book. But right now, I am more into
literature. The funniest book I read reecently was Matthew Hughes’ “To
hell and back: The damned busters”.You can read an excerpt here.

You can follow Pierre on twitter,@shvi, and on his blog.
